Four Walls

Four Walls is a short film I was commissioned to write about the effects of anti-social behaviour on council estates. The film is intended to be shown in schools and community centres as part of a wider educational project.
It isn't the style of story I enjoy at all, but I think that is a good test for a writer to understand the storytelling craft well enough to employ it objectively.
It was also a huge challenge to satisfy the criteria of the different government organisations involved. The police wanted their message to come across; the housing authority wanted their message to come across; a supported housing unit had a message...I had to try to get all of this information into a short film, in a subtle way, whilst creating a story entertaining enough to hold the attention of teenagers. It wasn't easy, but I am pleased with the outcome.

Book Launch at British Library

A short film made by Mardibooks covering some of the launch of my first book of short stories, Dead Men's Teeth. The launch took place at the British Library to a sold out audience of over seventy people. It was a great honour to launch a book at such a fantastic venue. The heart of British literature.

Homeless Film Festival Mustard Tree shoot

A short film behind the scenes at our shoot with The Mustard Tree homeless charity for their film 'A Common Bond'. Made by the charity service users during our 8 week filmmaking course. "A man struggling to contain an adder infestation on his farm takes his only daughter to university on the day she leaves home." This short film uses visual metaphor and folklore to explore the emotional complexity of a simple moment in a parent's life; a child leaving home. A moment made all the more powerful by the father's isolation. This script was one of the winners of the IdeasTap brief "Short Film Fund: Script". I was delighted to win this brief, and am very pleased with the visual storytelling and simple originality of this piece of work.
